Documentary about Joplin Globe’s tornado coverage wins award

The documentary “Deadline in Disaster” has won a 2013 Mirror Award in the “Best Single Story” category.
The awards, which honor excellence in media industry reporting, were announced June 5 in New York City.
The documentary award recognized Beth Pike, Stephen Hudnell, Scott Charton and Doug Crews for the Missouri Press Association documentary that follows the staff members of The Joplin Globe as they cover their community in the aftermath of the May 22, 2011, tornado.
“I was proud to accept on behalf of MPA,” said Carol Stark, Globe editor, by phone from New York City. “The film is a tremendous legacy to the work done by The Joplin Globe.”
The Mirror Awards were established by Syracuse University’s S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications to recognize the reporters, editors and writers who hold a mirror to their own industry for the public’s benefit.
The winners were chosen from more than 300 entries by a group of journalists and journalism educators.
Pike, director of the documentary, said: “It’s truly an honor to be nominated, let alone receive this award from the Newhouse School of Journalism at Syracuse University. We share the kudos with The Joplin Globe staff and the community of Joplin, whose compelling story in the aftermath of their EF-5 tornado had all the components to good, journalistic storytelling.
“We’re humbled by the Mirror Award and what it represents.”
The documentary was shown on Public Broadcasting Service stations across Missouri in connection with the second anniversary of the tornado.
