Michael Bushnell, along with his wife, Christine Adams, bought The Northeast News in 1998. They converted it from a weekly tabloid shopper into a viable community news source serving the historic Northeast community as well as the Greater Kansas City metro area.
Bushnell introduced the Northeast Newscast in 2017. To date, more than 350 podcasts have been recorded and archived.
He received national attention in 2021, when he published a blank front page on March 24 to demonstrate what it would look like if a community lost its local news source. The story was picked up by CNN, The New York Times, The Seattle Times, Huffington Post, and other media outlets across the globe.
The Northeast News won 14 Better Newspaper Contest awards at the 2021 Missouri Press Association convention.
Wanting to retire, Bushnell sold the paper in May 2022. He agreed to stay on as publisher through June 2024 to help guide it through the transition period.
