
Herman Michael “Mike” Sell, 85, of Columbia died May 7, 2026, after a two-year battle with cancer.
A U.S. Navy veteran serving from 1959-1968, Sell went on to graduate from the University of Missouri School of Journalism. Afterwards, he and his late wife Barbara became owners and publishers of the Monroe City News. During their 18 years at the News, he served in various leadership roles of Northeast Missouri Press Association and Central Missouri Press Association, including multiple terms as president.
Passionate about the importance of newspapers, he joined Missouri Press Association as advertising director after selling the Monroe City News. He was with MPA for 11 years until his retirement.
He is survived by three daughters, Jennifer, Holly and Lori; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; many friends and family; and even more industry colleagues from throughout Missouri.
