Pressroom dedication earns national recognition

Posted

Danny Shull, lead pressman for the Richmond News, was recently named a 2026 Operations All-Star runner- up in the small-market category, a national recognition from Editor & Publisher and the International Newspaper Group (ING) honoring professionals whose work helps keep newspaper operations running.

The Operations All-Star Awards recognize professionals working behind the scenes in newspaper operations, with honorees selected in large-market, small-market and circulation categories for their contributions to the industry.

Shull learned about the recognition during what he believed would be a routine Zoom meeting with company leadership. When Editor & Publisher Magazine Publisher Mike Blinder joined the call, Shull still did not realize the meeting was centered on him.

“I actually thought it was a potential print customer wanting to get a hold of us and talk things over,” said Shull. “I was shocked.”

General Manager Sharon Donat nominated Shull for the recognition, detailing his role in producing nearly 16,000 newspapers each week across six publications, including three community newspapers and three commercial print publications.

Beyond operating the press, Shull performs preventive maintenance, diagnoses equipment problems and completes repairs, including coming in on weekends when needed to help prevent future breakdowns.

“He is really dedicated,” Donat said. “I really don’t worry about printing at all, which is a major relief.”
