Susan Thomson

Susan Carmichael Thomson, 86, died June 8, 2025, in hospice care in University City.

A Missouri transplant by way of New York state, Thomson joined the St. Louis Post-Dispatch after moving to Clayton with her husband in 1973. In her more than 30 years at the newspaper, she held numerous reporting and editing positions, including being the first woman to serve as the Post-Dispatch’s business editor.

In the early 1990s, she served as president of the Society of American Business Writers and Editors. In her initial column writing about St. Louis businesses, she wrote, “anything will go, as long as it adds to our understanding of living and making a living in St. Louis.”

She is survived by two sons, Bruce and John; several grandchildren; and many more family and friends.
