Peggy Scott, president of Missouri Press Association and publisher of Leader Publications, introduces Wildwood Mayor Joe Garritano. Wildwood was incorporated as a city in September 1995, making it one of the state’s youngest municipalities. Wildwood is also large, about 67 square miles, but home to several green spaces and parks, including Babler State Park.

Eikmann’s presentation on St. Louis history covered some “unseen” aspects of the city, including a column about eligible bachelors, the “Cracker Castle” (look it up!), early photographers in St. Louis and the area’s student-produced Prom Magazine.

Jeremy Gulban introduces the Trenton Telegraph, a newly launched publication in Grundy County to replace the Republican-Times, which was shuttered in June. The Telegraph published its first edition the week of the convention, and the entire venture happened at the request of Mayor Jackie Soptic, who wanted to make sure her community didn’t lose its local newspaper.

Jackie Soptic, mayor of Trenton, receives Missouri Press Association’s first Newspaper Champion Award for her tireless efforts in helping to restore a newspaper to the citizens of Trenton and Grundy County. Soptic said Trenton and the surrounding area has a proud history with its local media and didn’t want to see that end.
