In 1885, a public school teacher came up with the idea to celebrate America’s “Flag Birthday” with his students in Wisconsin. Flag Birthday and Flag Day commemorations spread across the country to celebrate the adoption of the Stars and Stripes on June 14, 1777.
In 1916, President Woodrow Wilson signed a presidential proclamation recognizing Flag Day as the anniversary of the Flag Resolution of 1777. Missouri’s own President Harry Truman signed an Act of Congress on Aug. 3, 1949, designating June 14 as National Flag Day.
