St. Joseph News-Press publisher David Bradley has been appointed to the University of Missouri System Board of Curators.

Also appointed to the Board of Curators was former Missouri state Sen. Wayne Goode, 71, a St. Louis Democrat.

The nine-member board oversees the operation of UM’s four campuses in Columbia, Kansas City, Rolla and St. Louis.

Bradley, 59, a Republican, was appointed by Gov. Jay Nixon as the UM system’s sixth congressional district representative.

The Missouri Senate must approve the appointment.

Bradley, who attended Syracuse University, has supported community journalism programs at MU. He has a son who attends MU and a daughter who will attend law school at the University of Missouri-Kansas City.

“I hope I can bring a strong business background to the board,” Bradley said.

The other current members of the board are a nurse, three lawyers, a banker and two business administrators.
Bradley’s term is for six years, ending Jan. 1, 2015.

Bradley said he hopes to keep the UM system on the cutting edge of higher education and keep it at the forefront of economic development in the state through research and cooperation with businesses.
“I’d also like to do what I can to help the university attract young talent to the state of Missouri and help keep our young talent in Missouri,” he said.

Bradley was president of the Missouri Press Association in 2007.
