More Help Engaging Community Newspaper Readers

In Foundation News On

"Social media isn’t really about technology, it’s about attitude." That’s the message Joy Mayer shared in the July 20 Missouri Press Foundation seminar at the Reynolds Journalism Institute on the University of Missouri campus. With that in mind, she showed community newspaper editors, publishers and reporters how to use tools such as Facebook and Twitter to remain information centers in their communities.

Mayer’s presentation highlighted success stories happening with newspapers across Missouri.

"My research into how Missouri’s community newspapers are making the transition to the digital world led me to discover one of my all-time favorite newspaper Facebook pages. Allow me to introduce you to the Houston Herald, which takes the news directly to its community in a way that respects readers’ time and makes it easy to be in the know," Mayer said.

If you weren’t at the MPF training in Columbia, you have two other opportunities to learn from Mayer and the Houston Herald.

Mayer has published a terrific retrospective article and provided links to her PowerPoint at http://rjionline.org/blog/community-news-and-facebook.

And Houston Herald editor Jeff McNeil will be a part of the Digital Innovations Panel during the Missouri Press Association Convention at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 22 at the Holiday Inn Executive Center in Columbia.
